Security Basics
In today’s computer driven world the risk of a machine falling prey to unwanted malware, viruses, Trojans and key loggers is at an all-time high, these all bring unique problems to the computer user, personal or business.
Here I will cover the basic steps which everyone should cover to provide at least basic, reliable protection against these threats.
-
Get an anti-virus program, you don't need to spend any money, as a personal user as there are many programs which provide as good, if not better protection than some well-known products on the market, these include MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials) Avira Anti-Vir, Avast!, AVG to name but a few.
-
Get a separate program for Trojans and key loggers, as well as malware, for this I would recommend Malware Bytes anti malware.
-
Learn the programs which you decide to use : this will allow you to set security levels, scan times and on demand scanning, when you know how the programs work, it will allow you to keep your pc more secure and minimise the impact that these issues can create.
-
Be careful what websites you visit and what links you click.
-
Download from trusted sources.
-
Do not open suspicious emails
-
Try using a more secure browser, I would recommend Firefox.
-
Finally, keep your computer up to date, these threats constantly evolve - make sure your protection evolves to combat it.
